January

As part of the many New Year’s celebrations Tasmania is home to an annual Yacht race and prize giving ceremony. Sponsored by Rolex the race begins in Hobart and goes all the way to Sydney. Also in sport as part of the Tasmanian Summer Racing Carnival Series comes the Devenport Cup, which is just about socializing and having a few drinks as it is the racing itself, and speaking of drinks a week long food and wine tasting festival (with a Maritime theme) usually runs from December in to January as well. As it’s hot from summer there are many outdoor activities, shows and festivals etc to keep you entertained, including the Hobart Summer and Comedy Festival.

February

February sees Launceston's yearly three day celebration of Tassie lifestyle held at the City Park, the Clarence Jazz Festival, the Launceston Horse Racing Cup and Take a Kid Fishing Day, which sees everybody, well go fishing! So why not join them?

March

March is an exciting and active month as Tasmania's international arts festival, known as the “Ten Days on the Island Festival” brings the works of artists and performers from all over the world including Ireland, Hawaii and Iceland. Also in March is the Tasmanian Forest Festival where everybody sets up camp.

April

As well as April Fools Day and Easter, April brings one of the world’s finest classic motor shows, the Targa Tasmania. This event is a competitive rally across several closed off roads. Also in April is the Tasmanian Heritage Festival and Anzac Day is celebrated throughout Australia and New Zealand in remembrance of the World War.

May

May sees the Tasmanians go wild in Loud Shirt day, a charitable event where the public adorn themselves with wacky and over the top shirts. So be sure to pack something “loud” if you make the trip in May.

June

As things are getting cold so are the events as June is home to the Antarctic Midwinter Festival, as many Hobart residents have links to the Antarctic. The event brings exhibitions, lectures and demonstrations to celebrate the shortest day and longest night of the Antarctic year.

July

In July comes NAIDOC week, a celebration of the survival of Indigenous culture and the Indigenous contribution to modern Australia. Entertainment includes live music, TV star appearances, local performers and much more. Also in July is everybody’s favourite, the Chocolate Winterfest, which is Latrobe's wickedly delicious festival celebrating all things chocolate.

August

In August there are lots of public holidays and events including the 40 hour Famine charitable events, National Science Week, Hearing Awareness Week, Children’s Book Week and Daffodil Day.

September

September is home to National BBQ Day, where residents light up the barbie or venture out to cook offs and large social events around food. You’ll get stuffed in September that’s for sure! Also in September is the Great Australian Bush Walk offering mass free guided walks to all.

October

There are lots of shows in October including the Burnie Show, Royal Launceston Show, Flinders Island Show and the Royal Hobart Show, all depending on where you visit. These are all public holidays. October also brings the soaking wet Derby River Derby.

November

Like beer? Who doesn’t? November brings the Tasmanian Beerfest offering well over boutique and premium beers from all over the world. The event last all day at the Hobart Regatta Grounds.

December

Festivals, outdoor shows, concerts and of course Christmas themed celebrations all get in to the swing of things as summer lightens the mood. So on top of your planned activities and sightseeing why not take part in one of the above events and book your holiday accordingly...
