New Zealand is a very busy and active country and has things going on all year round. You should obviously book your trip or holiday based around the activities and sights you want to see, but the following calendar can help you pick a month when there is a little extra going on that can add that extra touch to your holiday. The below list of New Zealand events may also help you prepare for any customs or public days that you can join in with.
January
There are literally tones of things to do in the summer time, from outdoor festivals and concerts to more cultured events like the Toi Te Papa Art of the Nation event or Sculpture in the Park. Plus there’s always Motorcycles Unleashed that the whole family can enjoy, featuring a general motorbike shows and stunt entertainment. If you’re a movie buff also be sure to check out Hawke’s Bay’s annual outdoor film festival.
February
February is all about sport with the International Rugby Sevens Tournament in Wellington. You may also want to watch the Coast to Coast cycling event where cyclists race 140km in three stages, including crossing the Southern Alps in a 36km mountain sprint and kayaking 67km of the grade two Waimakariri River.
March
Sport continues as March is packed with events including the highly acclaimed Wellington Dragon Boat Festival (where Over 40,000 spectators close off the shores to watch over 80 adult and school teams race), the annual Te Houtaewa 90 Mile Beach Challenge Run, (where all can take part in some form), The GoldRush Multi-Sport events in Otago and the popular Race to the Sky (as spectators watch several teams try their best to get their vehicle to the top of the Queenstown hills).
April
April is a little more laid back as fishing enters stage with the Lake Taupo International Trout Fishing Tournament. But if that’s not your scene then the Bluff Oyster and Southland Seafood Festival might be a yummy alternative.
May
May is a quiet month which sees The Southern Lakes Festival of Colour arts event get the most attention.
June
Winter is setting in and it’s time to show off the latest in agricultural products and services, at the annual Agricultural Fieldays in Mystery Creek, Hamilton.
July
July brings the exciting ten days Queenstown Winter Festival full of entertainment, partying, winter sports, shows and food. This massive event is a hit every year and must if you’re travelling to New Zealand in the winter.
August
August showcases the always entertaining Waikato Draught Tough Guy & Gal Challenge, where anyone can enter an off-road running and obstacle event. If you don’t want to run then sit back and watch whilst eating all the food.
September
As spring rolls in so does the arts, with the World of Wearable Art Awards, which is described as a theatrical extravaganza of art, theatre, performance, dance, lighting, music and humour. It takes place in Wellington.
October
Not much goes on in October, but you may like to check out the Bauer Pukekohe Express in Pukekohe, open to anyone that can ride a bike.
November
More bikes, but this time Motorcycles. This Methven event is a Motorcycle Street Race, which can be very fun to watch. Also in November comes the Pohutukawa Festival, an “action-packed calendar of arts, sporting, cultural and cuisine-related events”.
December
The last month of the year goes out with a summery bang, with the Nelson Jazz Festival, Waipu Highland Games, the Armstrong Peugeot Festival and tonnes of other fun outdoor festivals and sporting events, as well as the many Christmas themed celebrations.
