January
As the New Year roles in and the many celebrations wind down, January is still always a busy time in Melbourne, mainly because unlike lots of other places in the world it’s actually Summer. In fact on January the 1st is Australia's largest annual dance festival, Summadayze, featuring all the top artists from Ferry Corsten, to Armin Van Buuren. Also in January is St Jerome's Laneway Music Festival featuring popular bands and DJs. As well as music there are tones of art exhibitions and open air markets that beg your attention.
February
The hot summer excitement continues in to February with much of the same. Lots of music, outdoor events, open air markets (including crafts, fresh food and clothes) and popularly the Midsumma annual gay and lesbian arts and cultural celebration with a carnival to boot. Also you don’t have to be Chinese to enjoy the Chinese New Year celebration from China Town. Perhaps the most noteworthy event in February is the largest short film festival in the world, Tropfest.
March
With over 140 different themed food and wine events across Melbourne the Food and Wine festival is the place to be in March. But if sport is more your thing then the Phillip Island Superbike World Championship, Formula One Grand Prix or the Australian International Air show might be up your alley.
April
From March in to April comes the ever popular Melbourne International Comedy Festival and the “joke’s” on you if you miss it. Plus the world renowned Melbourne International Flower and Garden Show also takes centre stage during the month.
May - June
Sport begins to take over in to the winter months as the American Football League Premiership Season and National Rugby League start off with a bang. Matches are held throughout various locations but you’ll be sure to catch one live if you visit around this time.
July
July gets creative as the International Design Festival from the spectacular Federation Square, International Film Festival and Melbourne Art Fair all take place.
August
Celebrating the written word is August’s focus as Melbourne hosts the Writer’s Festival, featuring panel discussions, interviews and special readings from authors.
September
As spring roles in so comes the fashion as Melbourne Spring Fashion Week takes to the catwalk for some action packed runaway shows, parades and parties, giving you a taste of all the latest styles for the New Year.
October
October hosts the popular Melbourne Fringe Festival that offers a variety of entertaining events, including performance, comedy, circus, cabaret, music, visual arts, dance and movement and digital arts. There are thousands of artists taking over 100 venues with 250 shows. Also in October is urban and contemporary art display from the Melbourne International Arts Festival and the wacky Spring Racing Carnival.
November - December
The weather’s heating up and Christmas & New Year is coming, which means celebrations! Holiday celebrations take place all over the city including Alexandra Gardens, Birrarung Marr, Southgate, Federation Square, New Quay and Waterfront City.
